Hi there!
My name is Rebecca Wurm, and I am the owner of Full Circle OT. I am hoping to add occasional blog posts on OT related topics down the road a bit, but for now I thought I would take a minute to explain a little about how I got to where I am today, opening Full Circle Occupational Therapy!
This story starts back when I was 17 and thinking of heading off to college. I was a bit stuck as I found myself not really sure what I wanted to be when I grew up! There were a couple things I KNEW and a whole lot I was a strong MAYBE on...
I KNEW...
- I wanted to work with children
- I wanted to be able to travel with my work
I MAYBE...
- wanted to be a teacher
- wanted to be a doctor
- wanted to be an actor
- wanted to be a professional traveling wild woman
At a basketball game one evening of my senior year in high school, a friend's mom named Cindy asked me, "Becca, what are you going to study in college?"
I replied, "I don't know Cindy, I want to be a teacher but don't want to do the same thing every day, and I kinda want to be a doctor, but don't want to be in school for so long, and I'd love to travel...i just don't know!"
Cindy's face lit up and she exclaimed, "Come to work with me! I am a pediatric occupational therapist and it is the best job in the world!"
I laughed and agreed excitedly. Like most people, I had never heard of OT...but Cindy explained..."OT's work to help people with their occupations or the meaningful things and roles they have in their daily lives. So for kids, that is mostly play! You will not believe how fun my job is"
A week later I found out that Cindy was not joking. She literally plays for a living! One day in her "office" (a sensory gym at a local preschool for kids with Autism and other disabilities) and I was hooked. This was exactly the job for me!
The amazing thing is that I have never once looked back. I love being an OT more and more every year! I have worked in schools, clinics, people's homes, hospitals and residential homes and every single setting, every single population of folks, I feel so privileged to have worked with! I was lucky enough to take an advanced training in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT) in Mumbai India in 2006, and I worked with a mobile clinic in Nanyuki, Kenya in 2011. I know my OT related traveling days are not over yet! Cindy opening my eyes to OT is something I still thank my lucky stars for on a regular basis.
So fast forward many many years later and here I am! Starting a private practice in the community my family and I are lucky enough to call home for the foreseeable future. In my two years in Fredericton thus far, I have been watching closely, talking to anyone I can, and learning a great deal about this wonderful community. I felt a strong sense that this city of ours has some gaps in providing services for the kids whom need it most. I am quite determined to help fill those gaps!
Being aware that private OT services may not be a financial option for all Frederictonians, I am working to develop and lead community based groups that are significantly more affordable than private therapy, but also provide many treatment ideas parents can do at home that help to encourage your children in whatever areas they may be struggling with.
I will also be hosting FREE monthly information sessions beginning in November 2018 that allow parents to come and learn a bit about what OT can help with. Example topics will include:
- Sensory Processing 101
- Encouraging independence with self-help skills
- Fine motor pointers
- Tips for picky eaters
- Homework SOS
Please follow along on my Facebook page, my website, and my Instagram account as I dive into the world of private practice. I feel so grateful and joyful to be doing what I love, I hope you will follow my journey!
Sincerely,
Rebecca Wurm
